ComicBase Tip:

Error 1710, Error 2738 or “Installation Ended Prematurely” When Running Installers

Technically, this isn’t a “Vista” issue, but ever since Vista came out, we’ve seen this problem cropping up on the tech support lines. As a bonus to anyone googling up this tip by the number alone, the problem is basically this: a file called “VBScript.DLL” has somehow come un-registered (or gone missing) from your Windows configuration. As a result, anything that relies on VB Script won’t work…like, for instance most of the installers in existence.

To fix it, do the following:

  1. Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > (right click on Command Prompt) and choose “Run as Administrator” (if you don’t run as administrator, the following won’t work).
  2. In the command window window, type:cd c:\windows\system32 then press Enter
  3. Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll then press Enter. You should get a message saying that the registration succeeded.
  4. If the registration was unsuccessful, it’s possible you need to completely reinstall your Windows Script 5.6. Use Internet Explorer to do the download, since it requires validation to download. When installing, you may get messages asking if you want to replace newer versions of the same files on your system: click “Yes” to each one.
